Queen Victoria Park became the main public parkland on the Canadian side of Niagara Falls after a once-chaotic shoreline of inns, museums, stairways, and private tourist attractions was transformed into a government-run reserve. Established in 1885 and opened in 1888, the park was developed by the Niagara Parks Commission as the centerpiece of the city’s riverfront. Revenue from the Niagara Falls and Park River Railway, the Behind The Sheet attraction, and hydroelectric franchises helped fund greenhouses, landscaping, and other improvements while keeping admission free. Known for its views of the falls and ornamental gardens, it has remained a scenic, ceremonial, and active public space.
