At daybreak on April 13, 1777, Hessian Jaeger Captain Johann Von Ewald advanced toward Bound Brook along a stone causeway through a marsh by the Raritan River, crossing two bridges under spirited and steady American fire. Trying to stay close enough to reach town at the same time as the withdrawing enemy, he made it to the second bridge, about a hundred paces from the redoubt and Queen’s Bridge, where daylight left him exposed to heavy fire and only a handful of men had kept up with him, including Lieutenant Trautvetter, his hornblower Muller, Corporal Doernickel, and several Jaegers, with Buchwald and Ruppel severely wounded. Forced to lie on the ground before the bridge, he ordered “forward” sounded continuously until Colonel Donop’s column appeared eight or ten minutes later, prompting the Americans to abandon the redoubt. The attackers then entered town in a hard running fight with the garrison, and most of the defenders were either cut down or captured.
