For more than two decades, Jerry Welsh served SUNY Potsdam as a coach and mentor to the men's basketball teams, embodying the spirit of competition and sportsmanship. During his tenure, the Bears achieved outstanding success, winning the NCAA Division III National Championships in 1981 and 1986 and compiling a 60-game winning streak during the 1985-1987 seasons. In recognition of his exemplary leadership and commitment to excellence, SUNY Potsdam designated the gymnasia in Maxcy Hall as the Jerry Welsh Gymnasium.
