A 945-pound Atlantic blue marlin, the sixth largest on record at the time, was caught on July 28, 1983, aboard the Carolinian at Oregon Inlet, North Carolina. The captain was Tony Tillett, the mate was Bull Tolson, and the angler was 14-year-old Zak Garcia of Southern Shores, North Carolina. The fight lasted approximately one hour. The marlin measured 14 feet 2 inches in length and 72 inches in girth. Zak Garcia's crew included Mickey Hayes of Southern Shores, North Carolina, Ralph English of Altavista, Virginia, Dave Farkas of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, and Lou Thomason of Virginia Beach, Virginia.
