Douglas Stahlman was committed to the local jail on August 20, 1915, and after a commission examined him and declared him insane, he was sent to the county home. It was the second time he had been declared insane by a local jury or commission, the first occurring in Valpariaso [sic], Indiana, shortly after his wife's death in 1901. He later escaped from the county home and avoided capture for a week, while officials searched for him and several well-known citizens of the community received threatening letters from him, including one mailed from Summerville. On October 12, 1915, he was transferred from the Jefferson County Home to the Dixmont Hospital in Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, where he lived for the rest of his life. Douglas Monroe Stahlman died on August 26, 1942, at the age of 81.
