Gold Rush Historic Byway follows historic Highway 11 through spectacular scenery in the traditional homeland of the Nez Perce on the Weippe Prairie and past the National Park site where they met Lewis and Clark. Along the route are the “most terrible mountains” from the expedition journals and the prairies where the Nez Perce dug camas bulbs. The byway is closely tied to Lewis and Clark Corps of Discovery history, and it also reflects the famous 1860s Gold Rush and a rich logging history. Its 42.5 miles invite travelers to experience the same hospitality the Nez Perce showed the Corps of Discovery 200 years ago and to explore Idaho’s beginnings.
