Meriwether Lewis arrived in Marietta on September 13, 1803, and began his descent of the Ohio River aboard a keelboat as part of his expedition to explore the West. His crew included 18-year-old George Shannon of Barnesville, the only member of the Corps of Discovery known to have been from Ohio. While in Marietta, Lewis updated his journal, noting a visit from Colonel Griffen Green, the postmaster there, and wrote to President Thomas Jefferson from aboard his boat opposite Marietta. In his letter, he said he had arrived at 7 P.M., planned to continue early the next day, and reported that the water below Wheeling was abundant enough to let him proceed without using oxen or horses to drag the boat over ripples, adding that he found such animals efficient for the river's present conditions despite considering them somewhat clumsy. On September 14, Lewis and his party camped in Washington County, one mile above the mouth of the Little Kanawha River, and the following morning continued downriver to rendezvous with William Clark. On October 14, they reached the Falls of the Ohio in the Indiana Territory, where Clark lived with his older brother George Rogers Clark.
