A lamplighter used this cart to maintain village streetlamps, lighting the lamps each evening with a long pole and extinguishing them each morning. During the day, he used the cart to carry fuel and materials for streetlamp maintenance. The cart may have been built by the F.J. Aubeuf Company of Oneida, NY, circa 1928. A ladder was used to maintain the lamp at the top of the post, and the streetlamp frame had glass panels to protect the flame from the wind. The lamp would be placed on a wooden post about 8 feet tall, and one streetlamp stood on Genesee St near the Chittenango Creek bridge.
