On July 4, 1864, during the War Between the States, the 14th, 16th, and 17th Regiments of General McCausland's Army of Northern Virginia fired batteries from Camp Hill in a raid on the federal blockhouse at North Mountain, captured 2,500 troops and supplies, burned the blockhouse and the B.& O.R.R. Bridge over Back Creek, and marched the prisoners to Winchester, Virginia.
