The present Presbyterian church building in Patterson, erected in 1838, is the congregation’s third church. The first, often called the Old Meeting House, stood west of this site on top of the hill north of Triangle Inn Corner; it was established by tenants on Philipse land and settlers from Connecticut, and was probably the meeting house referred to in accounts of the Prendergast Rebellion of 1766 in Pelletreau’s History of Putnam County. The second building was begun in 1794 on land the church trustees purchased from Thomas Townsend in 1793, including one acre south of the road where the present Fellowship Hall and Grange Hall stand and a quarter acre adjacent to and north of the Episcopal cemetery; additional land was obtained from Stiles Peet and his wife Lydia for the site of the present building. Matthew Paterson served as an elder of the church and Colonel Henry Ludington as a trustee, and Ludington and his daughter Sybil are buried in the churchyard. The second church, finally completed in 1808, was demolished in 1838 as the present building rose during a period of growth and optimism. Reverend Epinetus P. Benedict, pastor from 1827, served for forty years during a time of great change in the town; born in Connecticut, he worked and married in the South before coming to the congregation, and his Southern sympathies and influence appear in the church’s unusual design for the area, more typical of the South, as well as in the absence of any mention of the Civil War in the session records, although his son Platt Benedict served as a Union officer. Since 1838, additions to the building have included one bay and a rare wooden ceiling, while the bell and yoke were purchased and installed in 1846, the apse was added at the rear around 1868, and organ pipes installed around 1900 were removed in the 1950s.
