Pixley in Pleasant Prairie Township grew around the life work of George Pixley, a Vermont native. In 1870, School District 44 was established at his home, and a schoolhouse built in 1871 was named in his honor before closing in 1949. In 1881, the post office was named Pixley as a compliment to him, and he kept it from 1881 to 1894, delivering mail to forty families three times weekly. That same year he opened a country store in his home, for a time known as the Wayside Inn, which became a Martin County landmark and community gathering place where dances were held and stagecoach passengers stayed. The building burned down in 1935, and in 1902 George Pixley sold out and moved away.
