On Saturday, August 14, 1841, the First Overland Emigrant Party left the river because hills obstructed travel along it and followed an uncommonly broken road, traveling about 4 miles without reaching the river, according to John Bidwell. That day, the party traveled about 15 miles over hills and mountains and camped on a small brook about 4 miles from the river, according to James John.
