Allen Wright bought the property around 99 E. Orchard Ave. in 1836 while he was county auditor, and his son, A. G. Wright, later owned the home. Built c. 1845 in a transitional style combining Italianate and Greek Revival, the house and street took their name from the abundance of fruit trees that once dominated the hillside. In 1881, dry goods merchant J.P. Gilchrist purchased the house for $10,000, and it remained in his family for over 50 years. It was divided into seven apartments in the late 1930s. In 1983, the Tom Miller family bought the home and restored it to a single-family residence. It was placed on the National Register in 1984.
