The Dalesburg School stood one-half mile south of the village site on land donated by Andrew and Lina Berg in 1872, with classes first held in the Berg home until a schoolhouse was built in 1874; a second building followed in 1887, a third in 1916, and the brick school in 1926 after fire destroyed its wooden two-room predecessor on January 11, 1926. The grades taught there varied over the years, including first through eighth and sometimes ninth and tenth grades. In 1969 the school district was divided between the Centerville and Beresford School Districts, but classes continued in the building until 1974, and the schoolhouse was sold in 1977 and became a private residence. August Peterson, a resident of Dalesburg, recorded the history of the village and community in his 1947 History of the Swedes who settled in Clay County, South Dakota and their Biographies. The community name Dalesburg, originally Dahlsborg, was first suggested in 1869 during efforts to organize a church for Swedish immigrants, many of whom had come from Dalarna Province, Sweden. The village itself was not founded until 1892, when Andrew Lyckholm and John Aust bought the merchandise of the Dalesburg Store and moved it to Lyckholm's home on the east side of the road. In 1893 Lyckholm became sole owner of the business, and the post office also moved to his home; he later built a general store on the west side of the road. In 1927 he and his wife Martha sold the store to Axel and Adena Swanson and sons, whose family operated a store and meat locker there until the 1950's. At various times Dalesburg also included a blacksmith shop, harness shop, hardware store and well drilling business, paint shop, post office, gas station and garage, implement dealership, feed and seed store, family dwellings, the Lyckholm farm, a band shell, a baseball field, horseshoe pits, and a mink farm. The Dalesburg Post Office served the community from 1879 to 1906, and although most homes and businesses once stood along both sides of the road, little remains today of the formerly thriving village.
