St. James Episcopal Church in Muncy is one of the most-studied Gothic Revival small churches and is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. An original house of worship erected in 1832 was dismantled in 1856 to make way for the new church, and its bricks were reused in the quaint building behind it that still serves as a meeting room. Richard Upjohn, founder of the American Institute of Architects and designer of New York City's Trinity and Boston's Congregational Churches, designed Muncy's St. James Episcopal Church in 1858. Its hard brown stone was quarried in the Montgomery hills and hauled across the frozen West Branch of the Susquehanna River by sleds. The two and one-half-story church has a 107-foot tower topped with a hexagonal spire, a 12-light St. Catherine's Wheel window on its Main Street façade, Tiffany Studios windows in the side aisles, and an interior with Minton floor tiles, some of which Muncy patrons worked together to hand make and replace after the originals were broken over the years.
