Kamikaze Attack on Gun Tub 10
Military
8
On October 29, 1944, while Intrepid was operating in the Philippines, it suffered its first kamikaze attack when a Japanese airplane struck Gun Tub 10. Just after noon, the airplane hurtled toward the position, which was manned by a group of African American gunners under the command of Alfonso Chavarrias, and the gunners fired at the incoming aircraft as it crashed into them. Flames enveloped the gun tub and nearby catwalks, killing ten gunners and injuring at least eight. Gun Tub 10 was later removed during Intrepid's modernization in the 1950s.
