Meshomasic State Forest in central Connecticut began in 1903 with the purchase of 70 acres, becoming Connecticut’s first state forest and the second in the United States. Created to demonstrate sound forestry to private landowners, it remains both a recreation area and a working forest managed for biodiversity, wildfire reduction, water-supply protection, and timber rattlesnake habitat. Civilian Conservation Corps camps during the Great Depression built roads still used today, while later highway construction, quarrying, and a Cold War missile site left additional historical traces. Its second-growth woods, older pine stand, rocky glacial terrain, and named heights make it both ecologically and historically significant.
