After the Battle of Mill Springs, Union soldiers hastily buried many Confederate dead in shallow mass graves near where they fell, and some bodies began surfacing within days. After the army left, local men undertook the grim work of reburial despite cold weather and bodies frozen to the ground, reinterring the remains at what is now Zollicoffer Park. Many Confederate soldiers killed in the January 19, 1862, battle are believed to lie in the mound there. In 1910, the United Confederate Veterans placed a memorial stone on the mass grave without listing names. In the 1990s, Geoffrey Walden used unit rosters and battle reports to identify more than 140 Confederate soldiers who died there. On May 26, 1997, headstones erected in memory of the fallen were dedicated; they do not mark individual graves but memorialize Confederates killed or mortally wounded at Mill Springs, and they are arranged by regiment in the order the units marched into battle.
