In 1889 the first school was held in the Benjamin W. Scott home, located a mile south of Hinckley Park, and it was often referred to as "The Old Mud Temple." In about 1908 an elementary school was built on Main Street across from the stores. The two-story building cost $20,000, was torn down in 1968, and the park occupies the site.
