On May 12, 1864, the 15th Regiment New Jersey Volunteer Infantry, commanded by Lieutenant Colonel Edward L. Campbell, assaulted the portion of the Confederate line held by the 14th Georgia Regiment. Of 429 engaged, the regiment lost 116 killed, 153 wounded, and 38 missing. Commissioners appointed by Governor John Franklin Fort were Hon. John F. Dryden, chairman; Sergeant William R. Gawley; Gen. Joseph M. Plume; Private Albert W. Whitemead; John S. Gibson; Private Henry S. Huffman; Sergeant William M.H. Wychoft, treasurer; and Private Stephen W. Gordon, secretary. The site was rededicated on May 16, 1964, by the Civil War Centennial Commission of the State of New Jersey under Governor Richard J. Hughes.
