Brice and Nathan Worley settled here in 1766. The site of Baldwin blockhouse stood here from 1770 to 1775. Nathan Worley was killed by Indians in 1777. The town was laid out in 1829, and lots were sold through a lottery. It was named for David Black, an early settler.
