House Mountain is a prominent ridge in Corryton, northeast of Knoxville, and at 2,064 feet above sea level it is Knox County’s highest point. Part of the Appalachian Ridge-and-Valley Province, it is a synclinal outlier of Clinch Mountain formed about 250 million years ago during the Alleghenian orogeny. Its forests, sandstone boulders, and varied bird and plant life make it a notable natural feature, while its two peaks offer wide views across East Tennessee. Much of its south side has been protected as the 527-acre House Mountain State Natural Area since 1987, helping preserve the mountain’s largely undeveloped character.
