On August 9, 1965, fifty-three civilian workmen entered the Titan II Missile complex near Searcy in work clothes with hard hats, hammers, and paint brushes. When an explosion ripped through the missile silo, they were trapped and lost their lives. Their sacrifice, and that of their families, was honored as no less than that of soldiers who wear uniforms and carry rifles.
