When completed, Villa Riviera was the tallest building on the Southern California Coast, and its French Gothic design won an award in Paris. It survived the 1933 earthquake and was seismically strengthened and restored in 1989-90. Villa Riviera was placed on the National Register of Historic Places by the United States Department of the Interior on July 25, 1996.
