Lone Wolf Community was named for a Kiowa chief whose tribe roamed the area until the 1870s. The community developed when John Mahoney donated cemetery and school sites. A schoolhouse erected in 1901 was also used for church services, and the first teacher, W.F. Knowlton, had 35 pupils. The local post office was Winston from June 26, 1901, to April 30, 1909, after which mail came by rural route. In 1906, D.C. Hazelwood built a local store. The Lone Wolf school, operating at different locations, served the community until it was consolidated. The cemetery, with its oldest grave dated 1892, continues in use as a burial place for area families.
