In the early 1900's Peter J. Hoffman organized a dray line and road construction business in which horse and mule teams pulled wagons and slip dirt scrapes, Anna Hoffman collected the bills, and the company had 10 employees. In 1927 Hoffman Construction incorporated, and Peter's son Duane joined the company as gas and diesel bulldozers replaced horse and mule power. The company contracted with the Wisconsin Highway Commission and built many highways in Western Wisconsin. In the 1950's and 1960's, Peter and David, Duane's sons, joined the company, and they later bought it as co-owners in 1982. In 1989, Paul and Jim, Peter's sons, and Mark and Kristine, David's son and daughter, joined the company. The fourth-generation construction company now employs over 250 people, and yearly contracts with the Wisconsin Department of Transportation total $12–$25 million.
