Lotusland is a 37-acre botanical garden in Montecito, California, on the former estate of Ganna Walska, whose four-decade transformation made it both a historic property and a major American garden. The land began as an 1870s nursery and was developed under several owners, including Ralph Kinton Stevens, an early Santa Barbara plantsman, and later the Gavit family, who added prominent Mediterranean Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival architecture. After buying the estate in 1941, Walska reshaped it into a sequence of distinct garden worlds, including notable cactus, cycad, blue, topiary, and water gardens. Open to the public since 1993, it is known for theatrical design, rare plant collections, and long horticultural experimentation.
