Tyler State Park is a 985.5-acre East Texas park north of Tyler, centered on a 64-acre lake in a transitional landscape where the western Piney Woods meet the Southern Post Oak Savannah. Land acquired in 1934 and 1935 was developed by Civilian Conservation Corps Company 2888, and the park opened in 1939 as part of the New Deal expansion of public recreation. Its lake remains the focus for boating and fishing, while the surrounding forest supports camping, swimming, hiking, biking, and birding. Rich plant and animal life, varied facilities, and its place within the Sabine River Basin have made it a longstanding regional destination.
