Science & Tech
Newport News Middle Ground Light stands on a dangerous shoal in Hampton Roads, Virginia, near major shipping lanes, where it was built to place a permanent warning directly on the obstruction. Identified as necessary in 1887 as larger ships made the shoal more hazardous, the lighthouse was constructed in 1890–1891 as Virginia’s oldest caisson lighthouse and first sparkplug lighthouse. Automated in 1954, it later suffered neglect, collision damage, and continuing deterioration despite repairs and a solar conversion. Changes to nearby bridge-tunnel lighting led to a red beacon in 2000. Sold at auction in 2005, it was restored as a vacation home while remaining an active light.
