In Abilene, Kansas, Dwight D. Eisenhower’s presidential library complex brings together his boyhood home, museum, library, and chapel in the town where he grew up. The project began in 1945, when local supporters organized to preserve his family home and build a museum, and it advanced after his mother’s death and the family’s donation of the house. The home opened in 1947, the museum was completed in 1954, and the library was dedicated in 1962 before the site entered the National Archives system in 1966. The chapel holds Eisenhower’s grave alongside those of Mamie and Doud Eisenhower.
