Butterfield Canyon
Nature
Butterfield Canyon in the Oquirrh Mountains of southwestern Salt Lake County, west of Herriman, is both a natural feature and a mountain route linking Herriman and Tooele when open. It was named for Thomas Jefferson Butterfield, who with Samuel Egbert came to the area in 1851 from West Jordan seeking land for livestock and family settlement. After finding a stream flowing from the canyon, the community that developed was first called Butterfield Settlement before becoming Herriman. Today the road through the canyon climbs to 9,180 feet, continues as Middle Canyon Road, and is used for travel and recreation. The canyon is also known locally for deer and reported fossils, including coral.
