In Tampa’s Ybor City, the former Ferlita Bakery preserves the neighborhood’s everyday social history in a setting tied to bread, cigars, and immigrant labor. Founded in 1896 by Francisco Ferlita, a Sicilian-born baker of Cuban, Spanish, and Italian descent, the bakery was likely among the earliest in the United States to make Cuban bread and became an important local supplier and gathering place. After a 1922 fire left only its brick oven standing, it was rebuilt on a larger scale and operated until 1973. Today the preserved ovens, exhibits, garden, and nearby casitas connect visitors to Ybor City’s founding, cigar industry, and Latin communities from the 1880s through the 1930s.
