Lieutenant Edward Fitzgerald Beale, appointed by President Millard Fillmore as the first Superintendent of Indian Affairs in California, established the Tejon Indian Reservation in 1853 with the sanction of the United States government for the welfare and protection of the Indians in this part of California. Fort Tejon was established in 1854.
