Lillie Essie Burke was a sorority founder, a teacher, and one of nine founders of Alpha Kappa Alpha, the first Greek-letter society for African American collegiate women, established in 1908. She taught English in public schools and colleges in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, and the District of Columbia.
