On 22 September 1823, Joseph Smith Jr. was harvesting wheat with his father and brothers when he was overcome by exhaustion from the angel Moroni's visits the previous night in the log home. His father sent him home to rest, and his mother explained that Moroni appeared to Joseph again as he rested under an apple tree. Joseph Smith Jr. recalled that as he tried to cross the fence out of the field to go to the house, his strength failed, he fell helpless to the ground, and when he looked up he saw the same messenger standing over his head, who repeated what had been told the previous night and commanded him to go to his father and tell him of the vision and commandments he had received.
