Originally known as New Salem, Delmont was founded in 1814. The center of town, which came to be known as Salem Crossroads, formed at the intersection of the north-south Greensburg Road and the east-west northern turnpike. Because of transportation and agricultural industries, the town flourished from 1830 to 1870, with grain and feed mills, tanneries, blacksmith shops, stables, inns, and taverns serving numerous stagecoach lines. The town was incorporated in 1833 as New Salem borough, and the name officially changed to Delmont, a valley in the hills, in 1967.
