East Helena's Main Street and J.F. Kennedy Parks offer tables, benches, rest rooms, a swimming pool, and playground equipment. The American Smelting & Refining Company produced lead bullion from ores shipped from Idaho, Montana, Newfoundland, Canada, South America, and Australia until it closed in April 2001. The Anaconda Company produced zinc oxide from slag at the AS&R Company until it closed in 1982. Founded in 1946, the American Chemet plant processes leaded zinc products and Montana talc for use as paint pigments and in the manufacture of Columbia Paint, and it also produces copper oxide and metallic copper powder. East Helena was home to the East Helena Smelterite Baseball Club of the Montana Copper League and to Major League ballplayer Herbie Plews, and Charley Pride, the famous country western recording artist, played for the East Helena Smelterite team in the 1960s.
