The Brooklyn Museum, in a Beaux-Arts building by McKim, Mead & White on Eastern Parkway, grew from cultural institutions founded in 1823 and reorganized as the Brooklyn Institute in 1843. After fire destroyed an earlier building in 1891, construction of the present museum began in 1895, with exhibits opening in 1897. Conceived on a monumental scale but never fully completed, it expanded gradually despite labor, funding, and maintenance problems. With about 500,000 objects, it became New York City’s second-largest museum, especially known for its Egyptian antiquities and wide-ranging holdings in European, African, Oceanic, Japanese, American, and contemporary art.
