From February 24, 1942 to October 12, 1942, nearly 1600 Italian residents of Pittsburg, California, were declared “enemy aliens” and unjustly banned from their homes, work, and communities, forcing them to relocate elsewhere under the U.S. government after its entrance into World War II. Many had lived in America for decades, had American-born children, and had sons, daughters, and other relatives serving with valor in the U.S. Armed Forces. Though labeled “enemy aliens,” they had made America their homeland and remained loyal Americans, sharing in the unnecessary hardships endured by 600,000 other Italians across the nation.
