Founded in 1991 in downtown Palm Springs, California, this museum is dedicated to the Agua Caliente Band of Cahuilla Indians of the Coachella Valley and serves as both a public museum and a center for preserving their history. Its exhibitions focus on Cahuilla culture and history, including the Florence Patencio Collection, and it has also presented off-site displays in Palm Springs and at California State University San Bernardino’s Palm Desert Campus. Beyond exhibitions, it maintains administrative offices and a reference library, publishes The Spirit, participated in the American Alliance of Museums Museum Assessment Program, joined the Smithsonian Institution Affiliations Program, and planned a major expansion.
