The Gates of Lodore is the striking entrance to the Canyon of Lodore on the Green River in northwestern Colorado within Dinosaur National Monument. Often used interchangeably with the canyon’s name, it marks where the river leaves Browns Park and enters a deeper, rougher landscape. From this point, the Green River cuts through the Uinta Mountains for about eighteen miles before reaching Echo Park, where the Green and Yampa rivers join. The name came from the Powell Expedition, which borrowed it from the English poem Cataract of Lodore. The area is noted for both its scenery and as the start of one of the monument’s best-known river canyons.
