Lost River State Park in Hardy County, West Virginia, grew from land tied to the post-Revolutionary War grant awarded to Henry Lee III, who built a summer house there when the property was known as Lee Sulphur Springs. That house survives as the Lee Cabin Museum, dating to about 1800 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places. The park itself took shape in the 1930s after Governor Herman G. Kump backed its purchase, with development carried out by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Near the site of the 1756 Battle of the Trough, the park combines frontier history, early architecture, and New Deal-era recreational design.
