Built in 1866 and 1867 in Danville, Indiana, the Hendricks County Jail and Sheriff's Residence preserves an older pattern of local law enforcement in which the sheriff's family lived at the front of the property while the jail stood behind. This brick Second Empire building features two stories, a three-story square tower, a slate mansard roof, and arched openings, while its rear wing and additions clearly separate domestic and custodial spaces. Later converted to the Hendricks County Museum in 1974, it remains a significant survivor of the county's governmental past and was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.
