Mollies Nipple, a visible Dixie landmark along the Rio Virgin, received its historic name from pioneer colonizers of Toquerville, Virgin City, Grafton, Rockville, Springdale, and other nearby communities. Its distinctive symmetry is protected from rapid erosion by a massive capstone of volcanic rock. In small caves at the base of the Hurricane Cliffs below it, Indian throwing sticks used for hunting small game and hardwood fire tongs used to lift hot stones from campfires and place them into pitch line baskets for cooking were found. Pottery shards discovered on top of the butte suggest that Indians likely used the landmark to send up smoke signals to hunting and seed-gathering parties. Hundreds of hikers have climbed to its crest for sweeping views of colorful geologic and historic features, and it rises 400 feet above the crest of the Hurricane Cliffs and 135 feet above the Hurricane Valley.
