District 18 Schoolhouse, an original one-room school measuring 18' by 22', was built in 1880 on a site in northeast Willmar Township across Foot Lake about a mile north of the radio station tower. Before its construction, school was held in private homes. The school served pupils of various ages and abilities, while country school teachers, generally young unmarried women earning meager salaries, were responsible for both the building and the students' education. A notable exception was Roy Sperry, who grew up in the Sperry House, now listed on the National Historic Register. As country schools became obsolete, the district was dissolved and folded into Willmar School District in 1965. The following year, the building was moved to the Kandiyohi County Historical museum site, where students can see and imagine what learning readin', writin', and 'rithmetic was like in earlier days.
