Antonia Moraga lived in the Chimayo valley during the 17th and 18th centuries. She raised ten children and managed the family’s farm operation in a Spanish Colonial household that herded sheep, hunted buffalo, and wove cloth. Her husband, Cristóbal Martin Serrano, was blind, and Antonia took charge of the family’s property in his stead. From 1695 to 1716, she appeared in court several times to testify in boundary disputes and land-ownership cases. In 1713, she filed a lawsuit to secure ownership of land as part of her grandfather’s estate.
