The battlefield and memorial ground are dedicated to the Union and Confederate forces that fought here on October 5, 1864. During the battle, units representing five Union states and six Confederate states were present. Most of the Confederate dead from this battle lie in unmarked graves, as do many of the Union fallen, now buried at the Marietta National Cemetery. The Union forces were the United States Army under Major General John M. Corse, including the Allatoona Garrison under Lieutenant Colonel John E. Tourtellotte with the 93 Illinois Infantry Regiment, 4th Minnesota Infantry Regiment, 5th Ohio Cavalry Detachment, 12th Wisconsin Battery, and 18th Wisconsin Infantry Regiment, and the Rome Detachment under Colonel Richard Rowett with the 7th, 12th, 50th, and 57th Illinois Infantry Regiments and the 39th Iowa Infantry Regiment. The Confederate forces were the Confederate States Army under Major General Samuel G. French, including Ector's Brigade under Brigadier General William H. Young with the 9th Texas Infantry Regiment, the 10th, 14th, and 32nd Texas Cavalry Regiments dismounted, and the 29th and 39th North Carolina Infantry Regiment; Sears' Mississippi Brigade under Brigadier General Claudius Sears with the 4th, 35th, 36th, and 39th Mississippi Infantry Regiments and the 7th Mississippi Infantry Battalion; Cockrell's Missouri Brigade under Brigadier General Francis M. Cockrell with the 1st to 6th Missouri Infantry Regiments and the 1st to 3rd Missouri Cavalry Regiments dismounted; and artillery under Major John D. Myrick including the Point Coupée Louisiana Battery, Barbour Alabama Battery, and Brookhaven Mississippi Battery.
