St. Landry Catholic Church, established in 1776, was the second largest Catholic church in the South and was named after the Bishop of Paris in 1650. Two former pastors are buried beneath its floor. Jim Bowie, hero of the Alamo, was baptized and married here in 1814. In the adjacent cemetery are buried General Garrigues de Flaujeac, a brigadier general in the state militia, Governor Jacques Dupre, Confederate war veterans, and other prominent residents.
