Alabama Hills has been one of Hollywood's favorite movie locations since 1920, with more than three hundred films shot amid its boulders and mountain vistas below the towering Sierra. Its landscape has appeared in backdrop scenes for Hopalong Cassidy, High Sierra, Gunga Din, The Great Race, Maverick, The Lone Ranger, Star Trek, and others, and the industry continues to use the area for movies, commercials, and stills. This movie heritage is usually celebrated every October at the Lone Fine Film Festival, where festival goers watch movies made in the Lone Pine area, tour filming locations, and meet some of the stars who worked there. Visitors are asked to help preserve the scenery and vegetation by remaining on established roads.
