St. Michael's parish undertook the creation of a new Religious Education Wing and Multi-Purpose Building as the result of years of planning, surveys, labor, and support by pastors, pastoral leaders, and parishioners. A Parish Space Utilization and Requirements Survey in October 1990 identified the need for more adequate classroom, meeting, office, storage, and parking space, and a Needs Assessment Survey by the Parish Pastoral Council in February 1992 found a significant need for spiritual growth and facility development. In July 1993, William Cardinal Keeler granted permission to explore the feasibility of expanding the physical plant, and on April 5, 1995, James Olivarri & Associates were hired for a feasibility study on immediate and future development needs. The successful Heritage Hope Capital Campaign made possible repairs to the rectory, renovation of the small church, atrium, and sanctuary, and the retention of Duane, Cahill, Mullineaux & Mullineaux as architect and Bruchey Builders, Inc. as general contractor. Groundbreaking for the new buildings took place on June 23, 2002, with W. Francis Malooly presiding, and by December 2003 both buildings were occupied. An Open House followed on February 15, 2004. The Multi-Purpose Hall with a gym, commercial kitchen, and storage room, along with the Religious Education Wing's classrooms, meeting spaces, and administrative offices, was intended to enrich parish life and support evangelization, liturgy, religious education, stewardship, and social outreach in the local community, the south-central region, and the Church of Baltimore.
